Single Photon Switching by Quantum Interference

Photons are superior carriers of quantum information and can be used to transport information from quantum logic gates to quantum memory. Control of one single-photon pulse by another provides more degrees of freedom in the operation of quantum information. With a N-type of four-level system, a weak probe field and a strong coupling field form the three-level-Λ-type configuration that gives rise to electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT), single photon switching can be fulfilled in terms of the quantum interference. This substantial reduction of probe transmittance caused by the switching photon may lead to promote its efficiency and enhance the application on nonlinear optics and manipulation of quantum information.
